Part of a global “liquid biopsy market”that is expected to be worth nearly £5 billion ($9.4 billion) by 2028, the Galleri testis being hailed as a tool that will revolutionisecancer screening. With just a single 10ml blood sample - the equivalent of twoteaspoons - the test’s diagnostics search for signs of dozens of cancers beforethey can be found by touch or symptoms.

The Grail team explained how their testwas developed using a machine learning algorithm - a type of artificialintelligence - to analyse data from tiny fragments of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) insomeone’s blood. In the blood of someone with cancer, about 0.1 per cent ofthis cfDNA isshed from tumours andcalled cell-free circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA). All ctDNA carries information about the kind ofcancer that created it.
