4.3 Photonics Project

Originally Translucent was formed to conduct research into the application of REO materials for silicon based photonic emission. The ?on-silicon? REO substrate is a platform technology which is highly relevant to the photonic industry where many tier one companies are looking to migrate their existing photonic devices, such as LED?s, to large diameter silicon wafers rather than continuing to use sapphire or other expensive substrates.

The use of REO?s in conjunction with silicon wafers to manufacture silicon-based photonics devices has already been developed and patented by Translucent. The company?s current focus on silicon substrates for LED production resulted in an enquiry from a LED company at the beginning of the reporting period. Analysis of this opportunity has confirmed that a major obstacle to the migration of low cost visible LEDs from sapphire substrates to silicon substrates is the absorption of the light by the substrate.

Using patented REO surface structures, Translucent has now demonstrated a 150mm virtual substrate with the required optical properties for viable LED production ? an important step towards product commercialisation. Work is now underway to integrate this REO based photonic substrate with existing nitride based processes used in standard LED manufacturing.
