    Return to US state for Anglo-Dutch supermajor as it launches key search for new tight oil and liquid plays
    Shell is opening up a new front in its search for new tight oil and liquids plays in the US as it looks to ramp up activity on its new position in the Mississippi Lime horizontal oil play in Kansas.

    The move is a return of sorts for Shell, which was active in Kansas in the middle of the last century but exited its position as interest in conventional US onshore reservoirs dried up.

    The Anglo-Dutch supermajor has acquired what it characterises as a “significant acreage position” on the Kansas side of the play, which extends from northern Oklahoma into southern and west-central Kansas. The company declined to say how many acres it holds but industry watchers estimate the figure to be at least 200,000 acres and Shell confirmed that it is continuing to lease in the play.

    The majority of that position came via a deal with privately held Woolsey Operating late last summer, a Wichita-based junior whose acreage package had drawn interest from US independents and international operators when it hit the market.

    The acreage is located in Harper, Barber, Kingman, Pratt, Reno, Sedgewick and Sumner counties that all lie in a block in the south-central portion of the state. Details of the transaction remain private......................."
