The vaccine, prepared by using samples of the H5N1 strain of bird flu provided earlier by the European Union, can be used on both animals and humans, primarily on people who work in close contact with birds, particularly poultry.

"These results are preliminary, but I can say with 99.9% certainty that the vaccine works," Racz said.

Hungary has the capabilities to produce 500,000 doses of the vaccine a week but a precise date for the start of production hasn't been set yet, the minister said, adding that further information was scheduled to be disclosed Friday.

"Every second counts now, we will be able to tell you more on Friday," the minister said.

Racz said several governments and pharmaceutical companies have indicated their interest in the newly developed vaccine. European Union and Southeast Asian countries have already approached the Hungarian government, saying they were interested in buying the vaccine in a dosage of over 10 million, Racz said.

"Our primary task is to secure the health of the ten million Hungarian citizens but, naturally, we have already offered our help to the international community," Racz said
