Unconventional plays need multiple holes to prove up the potential tight oil reservoir/s.

However the first hole will tell them if the important rock characteristics of good pressure gradient/pore spacing density and correct kerogen type are present.

The reservoir must be well understood prior to commencing a horizontal fracking program so that well spacing, fracking liquids, reservoir complexity etc are known. Its much more like a sub surface solid mineral resource exploration program apart from the fact 3D seismic is relied upon to a much larger degree once the drilling has confirmed 3D work.
