At least the rich discoveries are still there.
Final straw on NML was the wasting of big
dollars on worked out ground on a mine that had
closed 100 years ago.
South of Ballarat Prince line of reef,
Ballarat Gold, Lihir, Castlemaine all tried this
trick a few Ks north at Magpie.
They put in a decline, but the old boys
had cherry picked the narrow reef
with passages only wide enough for a barrow.
A jumbo would create shiploads
of waste rock - lots of hard basalt there too.
Volcano filled old watercourses.
