As a kid my earlist memories of the garbo's walking from bin to bin carring a supply of large hessian bags, keep upending the bins into bag until full, leave it and keep going, an open topped dump truck would eventually come along, one bloke on top and couple of others chucking the hessian bags up, empty into truck, stomp it down and move along.
In those days, nappies were washed, the dog got the scraps and almost everything that could be used in the compost, was.
The milko delivered each morning, (the magies taking the cream of the top) and later the breadman would leave a loaf in the breadbin by the front door.
Lucky modern life came along and made it so much more easier for us...
