Howard assures farmers help hasn't dried up

Prime Minister John Howard has begun his tour of drought-stricken areas, assuring farmers in south-western New South Wales that they will not be forgotten.

"I admire Australian farmers - they are not whingers, they're doers," Mr Howard said.

"They're people who don't want handouts.

"They want though the hope that if they hang on and it does rain they can come back and that really in a sense is the role the Government must fulfil."

Mr Howard is travelling with Deputy Prime Minister John Anderson.

The visit will prepare them for a Cabinet meeting on Monday that will consider increasing government assistance for farmers.

"We want to keep the farmers in business as best we can, but it has to be within reason," Mr Howard said.

"No government has an open cheque book... but within reason I want to find out what additional things the Federal Government can and should do."
