I am frankly surprised at the position Garnaut is now reflecting: it had seemed from his earlier utterances that he appreciated some of the gravity of the threat, and might promote whatever steps were necessary to avert disaster.

It appears he has since been ‘nobbled’, or at least heavily (and effectively) lobbied by the fossil fuel heavies we know infest Canberra. Common sense tells us such lobbying would inevitably occur: what’s disappointing is that Garnaut was apparently not prepared for it, and the evidence suggests he lacked the necessary defence and has succumbed. If so, this is a massive setback and makes the challenge faced by the loose coalition of "Climate proponents" so much greater.
