One more interesting point - Peter Garrett has previously stood for election to the Senate.
Back in December 1984 (when Hawke was re-elected), Garrett stood as a candidate for the Nuclear Disarmament Party. He was unsuccessful in the effort, but the NDP did secure 9.7% of the NSW result (some 294,000 voters). So obviously, PG knew about Federal elections, the need to vote, to be enrolled, etc. So, what's happened since?
