This is why we need a carbon price.
After it was repealed, the activists turned their attention to attacking individual companies and forms of energy (coal and now gas) by shutting down AGMs, pressuring banks to stop lending to them, and pressuring superfunds not to invest in them.
If we had a carbon price, the political debate would center around the appropriate price and cuts to carbon emissions, rather than this company-by-company and fuel-by-fuel approach.
Ironically, a carbon price would be great for the whole sectors, as it would mean banks could finance gas companies and superfunds could invest in them.
I think if things continue as they are, much of the sector will be taken out by private equity as profit rates fail to be reflected in share prices (for all the above reasons).
