P2-b gas hub rising in Quezon
by Alena Mae S. Flores
Energy World Corp. of Australia is proceeding with its P2-billion liquefied natural gas terminal in Quezon province after obtaining an environmental clearance certificate from the government, an Energy Department official said Thursday.
The terminal will serve as LNG depot that will supply the fuel requirements of Energy Worlds 300-megawatt power plant in Barangay Ibabang Polo, Pagbilao, Quezon.
Energy director Jesus Tamang said the company recently held groundbreaking ceremonies to signal the start of the construction of the LNG power plant.
LNG supply will be coming from Indonesia, he said.
The Energy Department earlier said the construction of an LNG hub terminal in Quezon could be finished by 2013. A separate hub could be completed in Bataan by 2015.
Energy World is an Australian company engaged in the exploration, development and production of gas, oil and LNG and the design, construction, operation and maintenance of power plants.
Tamang said Energy Worlds LNG terminal project might force other power plant operators in the area, such as the 735-MW Pagbilao coal plant of San Miguel Corp. and TeaM Energy Corp., to convert to LNG.
Quezon Power Philippines Ltd., which owns a 460-MW coal plant in Mauban, Quezon could also convert to LNG.
Tamang said the department was evaluating the techno-economic aspects of related technologies for fuel shift to natural gas because LNG is cheaper and a cleaner source of fuel.
Tamang said government-owned PNOC Exploration Corp. and PTT Philippines, a unit of PTT Public Co. Ltd. of Thailand, had initiated studies on the feasibility of an LNG terminal in Bataan.
