QUEENSLAND only narrowly avoided slumping into recession in the December quarter, with the state's economy flat-lining for the period, latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data reveals.
The key economic measure of State final demand recorded zero growth in the three month period, after contracting 0.8 per cent in the three months to September (and that figure has been revised from a 1.6 per cent contraction previously).
The biggest contributor to the growth slide appears to be a contraction in government spending, with the period under review marked by thousands of public service job cuts and other austerity measures.
The National Accounts figures shows government contribution to final consumption numbers contracting sharply for the previous two quarters in the form of both general government spending and fixed capital (investment).
Nationally the Australian economy grew by a seasonally adjusted 0.6 per cent taking full year growth to 3.1 per cent, which is broadly in line with economists' expectations.
