THE Federal Government has agreed to back a gas pipeline to Gove that could save a thousand jobs and the town's alumina refinery.

Chief Minister Terry Mills said federal Resources Minister Martin Ferguson agreed yesterday to support the new pipeline.

The town of Nhulunbuy on the Gove Peninsula is hanging by a thread as it awaits the outcome of a review of its alumina refinery by the region's major employer, Pacific Aluminium.

The company is threatening to shut the plant to cut costs. The review is due in January.

There are 1400 employees and contractors working at the combined bauxite mine and refinery.

The mine is not at risk and may expand.

The refinery is powered by expensive diesel generators and is running at a loss...
