Construction is set to begin in the coming weeks on a $50 million LNG plant near Karratha in Western Australia's north-west.
The facility at the Maitland industrial estate will service gas-fired power stations being built in west Kimberley.
Work on the first of these is set to begin later this month in Broome. The station is expected to be supplying the town with power by March next year.
Project director Chris Murray says transporting the gas from Karratha to west Kimberley has been a challenge.
"We actually purchase the gas from a gas field offshore in the North West Shelf and we buy it from the Dampier to Bunbury natural gas pipeline and we pipe that to the liquified natural gas plant that we're building at Maitland near Karratha," he said.
"From there we take the gas via road trains up to the various towns for the project."
Construction of the stations at Looma, Derby, Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek is set to begin later this year.
