Goes to show you just can't trust this govt with any policy that involves broad-reaching and complex issues. They have progressively created a situation where reliable energy supply is increasingly at-risk through an over-reliance on renewables before the industry is sufficient mature, and by forcing the fast-tracking of closure of reliable generators and ensuring a lack of investment in maintenance of the assets. And when the coal and gas producers that used to supply these generators want to sell their product overseas as the market for their products is being squeezed in this country, we can't handle the inevitable consequences of being exposed to global supply/demand. These companies have to invest massive amounts of money in exploration and building infrastructure and should expect a fair return on that investment and be able to enjoy profits when market forces are favourable, because they also have lean times. This govt is so desperate for popularity that they want to limit these companies right to operate in a global market and convince Australians that it is in our interests and we should be grateful for saving $200 a year on our power bills (at some time in the future, and no doubt not for everyone). Well, I probably won't see the $200 saving, but I can immediately see the many thousands that have been lost in my shareholdings in gas producers today, and I'm sure this will flow on to the Superannuation Funds and annual returns of many Australians who are likely to see that $200+ vapourise in their superannuation accounts. The longer term issue is the lack of investment in the industry here in Australia as global players turn their back on us due to idiotic policy decisions. You can't be half-pregnant Albanese - either you support free markets or you don't - not just when it is popular politically.
