Environment Business Australia chief executive Fiona Wain said clean coal and carbon storage must be developed along with other clean-energy technologies, since coal as a power source would be around for the next 20 to 30 years.

A report by International Energy Agency published Wednesday said coal usage for energy production would increase by 73 per cent by 2030.

Ms Wain said that without solving the "coal problem the CO2 (carbon dioxide) problem would not be solved either".

Many businesses were looking at creating the next technological era and Australia has a big part to play, she said.

"I think we have got one area where we can lead on climate change and that's by showing that an energy-intensive economy can maintain its prosperity on the back of cleaner and renewable energy and energy efficiently," she said.
