"It is impossible to have a gay marriage without playing word games and changing the meaning of the word marriage.

By definition marriage is a union between two people of the opposite sex.

People are welcome to play with the meaning of marriage and call a union between two people of the same sex a "gay marriage" if they like but it is NOT marriage.

Marriage does NOT mean a union between two people of the same sex."

    Hi Siameseparrot,

The English language is the most complex and illogical language in the world. Why? Mainly because we have so many words with more than one meaning. Sure it may require a play on words but hardly a big deal compared with a play on "legislation".

In fact, whilst the Oxford Dictionary recognises marriage between the same sex as "an informal union", there are other definitions such as "a combination or mixture of two elements". So take your pick.

And beside if words such as Redneck, Homophobia, and Rapist gain dictionary respect, so there's no reason why they can't update "informal" to "formal" for the 2011 edition.

Just my two bob - on a topic that shouldn't bother anyone besides those that are denied the right to marriage. I mean their legal entitlements and liabilities are the same so what's the big deal.

    Cheers,

    Arkie
    (HAPPILY MARRIED)
