I am actually not defending or criticising the Gaza operation. I am just arguing against what I see as unfair criticisms.

It would be nice to have a constructive critical argument based on facts rather than myths.
I think you are being unfair though to expect Israel to have to put up with the rocket attacks? Your figures don't take into account severe psychological trauma of the southern population. Really no country would accept that.
