The main reason given was to demonstrate actual commercial viability (it will take months and years to really model thermal depletion rates), which is feasible due to the low cost of the demo plant (~$20m). From here, the project will be bankable enough to justify the large infrastructure costs, and GDY can apply for significant government grants to assist in the development of the first 500MW.
