    Sameh Fahmi: Ethiopia seeks Egyptian geological expertise

    Egytp's Minister of Petroleum Sameh Fahmi received Yesterday the Ethiopian Minister of Mines And Energy Resources Mohammed Dirir for talks on boosting bilateral relations in energy and mining fields.

    The Ethiopian Minister asked for the Egyptian geological expertise in making a survey for his country's soil.

    They also tackled the trilateral project involving Egypt, Turkey and Syria for producing and exporting phosphate to Europe, as well as discussing the establishment of a gas exploration project on Ethiopian territory.

    Fahmi added that his talks with the visiting Ethiopian Minister tackled the two countries' cooperation in producing the tantalum substances used in manufacture of computers, airplanes and rockets, taking into consideration the decision recently taken by the Egyptian cabinet to set up a joint venture with Australia at a cost of $ 80 million to produce this metal which is largely available in the Ethiopian soil.

    Sameh Fahami :Egypt ,Turkey to cooperate in mineral wealth domain


    Minister of Petroleum Sameh Fahmi said Monday that the Egyptian mineral wealth sector would benefit a lot from cooperation with Turkey.

    Tantalum was discovered in Egypt in the area between Hurghada and Mersa Alam in the Eastern Desert, he said.

    It is used in aircraft and computer manufacture, he added.

    Some $ 80 million will be invested in Tantalum in cooperation with Turkey, he elaborated.

    Commenting on Abu Tartour phosphate project, the minister's said the project will be transfered from the ministry of industry to the ministry of Petroleum.

    A booklet of investment opportunities in oil sector will be published to be easily accessed by the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI) with the aim of attracting more investments by Egyptian investors, he added.

    Egypt to be world's top producer of tantalum


    Egypt will become the world's number one producer of tantalum as of mid-2006, according to Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Sameh Fahmi.

    It is used to make light-bulb filaments, electrolytic capacitors, lightning arresters, computers, nuclear reactor parts, and some surgical instruments.

    Fahmi made this announcement following a meeting with executive officials responsible for the ministry's mineral projects.

    Australian companies have investments in this project located at Abu Diab area, Eastern Desert.

    The project's total investments hit $80 million paid completely by the foreign partner and the Egyptian petroleum sector's stake is estimated at 55 % whose value will be paid later on from the revenues of the project.

    Export contracts were concluded in advance with US, Germany and Japan.
