Coal plant promises big jobs boost

"A company says hundreds of jobs could be created in the Latrobe Valley if it goes ahead with plans for a $400 million coal processing plant at Loy Yang.

Environmental Clean Technologies has proposed to build a facility that will remove water from brown coal, so the coal emits less carbon when burned.

The company plans to export the black coal equivalent and it says a Vietnamese company has given in-principle support to fund the building of the plant.

The chief executive of Environmental Clean Technologies, Kos Galtos, says research has already proven the technology works.

"There's no if, it can, we already have, we do it on a daily basis at out test plant in Bacchus Marsh - now it's about bringing it to commercial scale, I think that there are hundreds of jobs that can be created in the first phase of our plant in the Latrobe Valley."
