As a graduate trainee for a large consultancy some twenty years ago I once slept under the desk over the weekend to help solve a bug which had affected the global accountancy system. We brought pizzas in (at our own expense) and with phone calls to both Canada and Japan we were able to solve the problem before start of business on Monday.
Now back working for the same firm, and mananging Gen Y I can honestly say that the majority of them would NOT do that, without first checking whether the pizza is claimable, requiring a room, and checking that extra time could be claimed as time in leue. For the most part I find them bright and hard working, and to be honest, only asking for what is told is their 'right' by people the same age as me working in HR and making policy to suit these politically correct times. I have no doubt that many of these Gen Y would work as hard as I did if they HAD to, but they are told that they DON'T have to, so who really can blame them?
