My father had a drink problem. He turned nasty when he took a few. My friends son had a drug problem. I know of a few others as well. Both of these people were trying to null pain from the past. It is tragic to watch. But my friends son is clean now. We had him stay with us afterwards a few days a week and he opened up to us. I do not have this experience personally. So am not qualified really to speak about it in great depth. But friends who have been to AA and NA on the whole say it is an outdated religious cult. Finding the correct help is key. Also for families of course. There is a good forum which my friend is a member of called HAMS which helps her a lot. This is all I can offer, sorry.
