I'm not talking about being overrun by neighbouring countries. I agree the US wouldn't let that happen so close to Djibouti. The threat is proxy violence directed at exploration crews - a seismic crew gets attacked by "unidentified gunmen" who then disppear back into the desert, perhaps with hostages, and oil companies will be extremely reluctant to continue operations there. It would be extremely difficult for Somaliland to stop that.
I am surprised to hear there are large numbers of US troops in Somaliland as opposed to Djibouti though. It's Djibouti that is the main US base in the region (Camp Lemonnier) for carrying out operations (especially drone strikes) on Yemen and Somalia. Can you confirm you saw large numbers of US troops in Somaliland as well as Djibouti?
