With the current Tesla 'boycott' playing out for the brand, western EV car consumers will be looking for alternative brands. Many Western consumers will not be looking at Chinese brands necessarily as the alternative option. What does this leave for the EV consumer market?
It may well be that our current partner Ford see this as an opportunity to quickly ramp up production and provide that trusted 'western car brand' option to western consumers. We currently have our demonstration plant feeding Ford through LCM in an effort to demonstrate a secure and trusted rare earth supply chain. This may end up being perfect timing for Ford to sign on serious off take from us and accelerate their EV production volumes higher than previously planned. With tariffs also hitting the company and the need for reliable assurance of parts, a Belfast facility near Halewood (basically a Melbourne to Adelaide flight) sounds quite handy. While not much direct news on the trial it must currently be going quite well if the media we see from the UK and Northern Ireland authorities is anything to go by.
Prior to the tariffs and the Tesla boycott, Ford Halewood stated it wants to build half a million power train units annually (by 2026!). This is more than 600 tonnes of magnet raw material.
