The thing is, jevvy, it is entirely plausable that someone on the then US administration used that excuse as a pretext for what ever the real agenda was when dealing with Scott Morrison.

Morrison, in my opinion, was malevolent actor who only ever operated in his own self-interest. I can never forget how he even betrayed the coterie of fools in his party by secretly usurping their portfolios by becoming a secret minister for various portfolios. If that happened in one of the Asian-Pacific islands It'd be called what it really is: an attempted political coup.

And, yes, in every nation there are vulnerable assets ripe for the taking in an invasion or conflict. In the advent of imminent and possibly permanent stratig loss, one does not need too vivid of imagination to understand how they may be taken out of play to deny them to any enemy.

But in the scheme of things, it's important to realise that the current antagonations are 100% confected to suit an agenda in much the same way WMDs were in the Iraq War.
