Often first world nations, with all their competing internal interests, can't get out of their own way. I guess that's the advantage central command economies have, and they dont have to be Chinese to have one. A good deal deal of Asia operate like that, almost like a cartel.
Instead, the US have powerful lobby groups and well heeled vested interests, so its hardly surprising they often don't see their vulnerabilities till its too late. And then when they do see it, theyre often too arrogant in how they seek to rectify it. Though year's ago China pulled the critical minerals card on Japan, the US did little. Now Trump and the West seem surprised when the same card is played in response to tarrifs after the semiconductor restrictions.
I'm quietly confident Trump's strategy of putting the cart before the horse will be discussed in international relations studies for years to come
