Ford’s EV sales surge, fueled by strength in F-150 Lightning electric trucks

Ford’s second-quarter EV sales in the U.S. rose 61%, with the brand ranking second, behind only Tesla

Ford Motor Co. reported second-quarter U.S. electric-vehicle sales Wednesday that rose sharply from a year ago, boosted by strength in sales of its F-150 Lightning electric trucks.

Sales of hybrid vehicles also saw a big jump, fueled by Maverick hybrid trucks, to reach a new quarterly record.

On Wednesday, Ford reported second-quarter deliveries. U.S. sales volumes totaled some 536,000 vehicles in the period, up about 1% year over year.

All-electric sales, including the F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E, came in at almost 24,000 units in the second quarter, up 61% year over year.

Hybrid sales came in about 54,000 units up 56% year over year.

“Hybrid and electric vehicles are driving growth,” said Ford Blue President Andrew Frick in a news release.

Ford shares have been performing better lately, up about 5% over the past month.

A rebound in all-electric sales has helped investor sentiment.

In comparison, Tesla stock is up 36% over the past month.

Recovering EV sales are helping calm investors, who have been nervous that global auto makers’ spending on EV platforms had been wasted—or wouldn’t eventually turn into solid profits.

Solid overall U.S. car sales aren’t hurting either.

Americans are on pace to buy some 16 million cars in 2024.
