I don't think the crazy precautions/measures are based around the virus as it is now. The potential for such an easily transmitted virus to mutate and have a slightly higher mortality rate would decimate our species. We just don't know enough yet about the long term health ramifications to 'take our chances' as a collective. Alpha males are only Alphas until they aren't. Then they fertilise the ground like everything else.
