I thought of you when I read this @piwi33 - link to PDF of the storey from the AFR here (Andrew Forrest, Mike Cannon-Brooks_ Sun Cable never made sense.pdf)
The gist of the piece is that this project was doomed to fail because the engineering never matched with the ambition. Seems the issue is the movement of energy in an efficient way. We have lots of a solar energy available in the Australian desert, and a market in Singapore where people want to energy - so how do we get it to them? Seems a cable is not a good way.
Obviously the best place to sell energy is where it's produced - problem is that often those places are not where the demand for energy is.
The $35 billion dollar question in this case is how do we get that energy to market in the most efficient way possible?
The parrallels for EXR are obvious. We all understand that there is a cost for conversion of solar energy to hydrogen - but in the same way there isn't a ready market for energy in the Gobi Desert - so how do we get the solar and wind energy from the Gobi in the most efficient manner 400km away. Finally, how do we make that energy usable in a dispatchable manner? That is the when the energy is used is almost as important as the where. As we all know a problem with wind and solar is that the power is produced when the sun is shining and the wind is blowing. That may not be the time the energy is required - so how do we store excess energy production from wind and solar so that it can be converted into dispatchable power when and where required?
