My understanding is that its easier to produce hydroxide from the spod, but carbonate can be converted to hydroxide at reasonable cost and around 1k/ton if I quote AM’s figure correctly.
I think the hydroxide route is also part of a bigger picture, after reading an AFR article this morning, I think the 3 plants in WA solve many problems for the Chinese, with the most advantageous but least discussed promblem being the main reason... waste and pollutants.... it was written 94% waste from the conversion of the spod, think about it, how many tons is that going to be at nameplate capacity??....who’s paying for the disposal and where will it be disposed??.. I think this is something being learned from all the previous IO importation. It also stated the split between Giga factories was 54% carbohydrates to 46% hydroxide, of course this may change, but I think only one part of the story is being told with recent developments in Chilie possibly hampering supply...I think it’s purely an offset and a balancing measure...
All IMO of course...
