While interest rates were high then capital growth was high too.
My sister bought a modest house in the 1980's (while a Uui Student - back in the days when there were no fees), for $35,000 and sold it two years later for $85,000.
So 18% interest was actually not too bad (A house that today would be worth roughly $750k).
