The gaps don't "need" to be filled but the (my) statistics show that they do so with a pretty high percentage so with that in mind it could be a useful tool if planning a trade (or investment).
If trading & knowing that they close x% of the time in x number of days one could if looking to invest wait until it closes before entering (& possibly entering at the sp prior to the gap) as against jumping in after a gap and stressing about the sp falling afterward & wondering why.
On the other hand.
If trading, then one could expect to sell on the day or day after the gap with the confidence that you could potentially re enter at the sp prior to the gap forming.
It depends on what your plan is at the time I guess.
