Rio is a long term thinker. Very much a corporate organisation not dominated by personalities. They obviously see something in the Owendale Scandium ( major critical mineral dominated by Russia ) comes with the advantage of Nickel and Cobalt battery minerals. Owendale could stand alone but Platina was never capable of making it happen.
We have a govt that is prepared to invest big in Making the Future Rio could make it happen. Not sure SRL could recapture the the original vision of mine, battery, recycle facility.
That said someone is thinking that SRL is undervalued, and it doesn't appear the person with the 1.2m short position trying to cover it.
