Freshwater is an important component in the lithium brine operations, as it is used to separate the lithium from the other minerals found in the water. The fresh water is also used to keep the residue disposed of properly, so as to prevent contamination of local water sources. There is only limited supply of freshwater that can be used for these operations as it must be sourced responsibly and carefully, due to its scarcity in Rincon area. In addition, it can be expensive to obtain and transport this freshwater, which further limits the available supply.
