Can’t remember the last time a bank handed over a suitcase full of 50’s when someone borrowed money for a house!?
It’s almost all “ones and zeros” on a spreadsheet, created out of thin air afaik.
Afaik they can lend FAR more than they have in savings.
Iirc the discussion ages ago about brokers etc lending “your shares” was initially related to super funds etc, but may also extend out to more “standard” brokers, depending on the actual ownership structure of the holdings.
AFAIK, my shares are held in my name, directly, and there is no way that my online broker can lend them to anyone.
Other brokers etc may vary?
A bit like some of those crypto mobs, where they actually/formally own the crypto and retail basically just have their name “attached” to certain amounts; so if/when they get in financial trouble, there is no guarantee you will/can get your $$, as they may sell them to save themselves first?!
It sounds to me like most of the “basic” online brokers, that I assume many of us use, couldn’t actually lend our shares to anyone…? Can anyone shed more light on this?
Cheers
