I'm also weighing up the tech/battery grade aspect of AGY operations, but am unsure Which Way To Go.
Here's some of my thoughts.
Note in Allkem's March23 quarterly, they produced 65% tech grade.
I've seen tech grade listed as anywhere between 99.0 & 99.5% purity, so it's not exactly sawdust off the butchers floor stuff.
But, if battery grade is the holy grail, one might assume with just 35% battery grade leaving the plant, there are some pretty abashed faces, management are angry and staff are being turned into newts.
Take a look though at the AKE sales figures and especially the gross cash margin of 91%!
That's plenty of ham and jam and spam to go around in the bakery
Are we just all assuming JZ and PA are aiming for 100% battery grade, as the ops updates only specifically call that product out?
Has there been any detailed commentary from the team around this?
Q&A at conferences/AGM's?
As a battery cell maker, would you pay extra for 99.79% product you know can be simply tipped into the vat after a spot quality control test, versus one that has to go through your own final purity process. Why yes you would. How much is that final purity process line to set up and run, and what do you take off your supplier's price to cover that, with a little extra? In the scheme of things, is this significant, and are Jerko and Pablo holding the Ace of Spades?
My Evil Homer shakes his maracas & whispers though, perhaps it's a somewhat unrealistic 'nice to have' if your tech grade profit is much sought after and your customers are happy to give it their own tweak, is an absolute cash generating monster, and it's making those that are turning this stuff out giants in the industry.
Anyways, pretty soon now AGY will be presenting a similar production table in their quarterly's from their own Palace of the Brine
