The fascination with battery grade is really tiresome. The price differential between battery grade and tech/industrial grade is less than 5% (see below). Is the additional time, effort and cost worth it to achieve the "holy trinity" of battery grade? The majors such as SQM, Albermarle, Livent and Allkem don't seem to think so.......
So many here seem to believe that only "battery grade" lithium carbonate makes its way into batteries, when technical grade is predominately used as feed for LFP batteries. The lower cost of LFP batteries has seen a surge in demand, even being adopted by companies such as Tesla. If you're driving a Model 3 in Australia, it was made in China using LFP batteries, using a tech grade feedstock.
