The share owner doesn't get any money as I understand it. The broker lends your shares and others shares out from their pool being careful to cover and they pocket the interest. They also take the risk as apposed to the owner. If I understand it correctly.
If you were to loan out your own shares and things went the wrong way you'd be in an infinite world of hurt because you likely couldn't cover.
Shorting $20 on e.g IGA markets app is nothing compared to borrowing 20M shares.
These guys hold 100M's shares for security becasue as we've seen before it can and has flipped 50M shares in a day.
