But, the wind (so to speak) has been taken out of the EV sails (and sales) by the effects of the Ukraine War. Germany for example, has been dealt a severe blow to its economy having become overly dependent on wind and solar and using gas as a transition fuel. Cuts to their gas supply by Russia has crippled their industrial base and economy. Many in Germany regret going hard on the energy transition. And other countries are asking hard questions about the need, and the underlying assumptions (is global warming really anthropogenic and what good is crippling our economies to meet carbon reduction targets when 60% is being produced by China and India who aren't playing ball).

At the same time, Western Governments realise that China is gaining geo-political advantage through its rapid industrialization driven by cheap energy being unimpeded by concerns about global warming.

The world is in two states of mind (a form of mass cognitive dissonance). On the one hand, political leaders and organizations like the United Nations are banging-on hard about global warming but on the other hand there is real reluctance to actually to commit fully to do anything about it.

In Australia we can see that happening. The current government is committed to spending a huge amount of public money to an Energy Transition but risks electoral defeat in trying to do so. Like The Voice debacle, it's a loud and vocal minority pushing for it, but the average twin-cab diesel ute driver doesn't care so much but will get really pissed when the effects impact his/her lights, car, lifestyle, and jobs.

The above factors are causing a hiatus in the pace of EV production and therefore the demand for Lithium.

Big auto (rational actors) are seeing that the world is pausing to reconsider. Nobody knows which way it will fall.
