Appears pressure from policy makers in China regarding reuse of spodumene waste in cement industry as well as project environmental factors. Spodumene & lepidolite mining & processing is definitely more environmentally damaging than brine production from evaporation.
At least with brine evaporation, it's more of a water issue which gets re-injected into the aquifer.
I'm not too sure of the hydrogeologic modelling of Salar and will need to do more research. I wonder whether they use a shandy of basement groundwater and the processed brine in the reinjection process.
