I'll go to Hyundai's website...
That 44k Hyundai Ionic you quoted, is a plugin hybrid with a ICE engine, The cheapest Ioniq starts at $49k for the EV Iconiq & $63 k for the EV Kona.
The Ionic Hybrid (non plug in) which charges as you drive, like ICE Toyotas Hybrids, retails from $37k.
It will be interesting which ones sell the most, often its the cheapest versions as Govts have budgets.
As someone on a budget I prefer the Ioniq Hybrid which has a range of... wait for it! 1,250km's (same as the plug in hybrid as it still uses the 1.6l ICE engine that is $44k but has a tiny battery range of 63km's)
... Then we go for the $12k more expensive pure EV version of the Ioniq and we have a staggering 280km's vs 1,250km's.
Do a bit of number crunching based on Hyundais Cost to Run Calculator & you get a 2.5 year price parity period, when driving 200kms/day, or 180,000km's. 180k of driving fuels costs before the Hybrid costs more than its Pure Ev Counterpart that has done Zero driving. If you drive less than 100km's per day, say 700kms/week or 36,400kms per year, it will take 5 years to get to a price parity.
Hybrid Ice Engines Vehicles have been the big sleeper IMO.
As for Norway, they give EV's away & I'm pretty sure every homeless person has one, jokes aside, they have made a policy to ban the sales of ICE cars so what other choice does dealers have, especially when they have been subsidized over 50% at times, ahh sell a car which will be banned and nearly less for the consumer because of the subsidies... UMM, if the subsides go and polices go back to how they were, will the consumers still buy the ev's?
As we all know we can agree govt depts like spending money, govt fleets on the road AUS get turned over every 2.5-3years or circa 100,000km's.
If your an accountant or treasurer of a dept if you are doing your job correctly in the best interest what one are you going to buy,
If you have a mortgage and kids which one will you buy... And I am just comparing Hybrids to Pure EV's,
This is not a comparison vs Normal Cheap fuel efficient ICE Cars to Pure Ev's, the cost and efficiency to parity is even more of a discrepancy.
And fleets currently are not even using Hybrids yet because they are too expensive and depreciate more than the ICE versions for resale, so the market has a long way to go.
This has been a bit off topic GLN, but had to comment after seeing #showmethamoneys post, but the EV smack down on ICE vehicles isnt even close as the hype has been I bought 100% into it, but have taken a step back a reality, I like lithium, I like GLN, I like the new battery tech, I have the same thinking of alot of you, but I still think it will fall short in AUS markets. EV's will work in some places, some not, atm it still depends on Govt Policies & Rebates / Subsidies etc. Morally I am on the fence, I feel for people have no choice to breathe pollutants from tail pipes, but don't want to be force to own one, or hurt my hip pocket. I would rather invest that $12k buying a Hybrid or even new ICE car over Buying a NEW Kona EV.
ICE Cars are here to stay, Hybrids and Hydrogen are the alternative for Australians in future, because of the range they offer.
If i had alot of disposable money and felt the need to buy a Ev in Australia I would, but for 99% of the population, we have mortgages, kids and cost of living, will make it hard for me to spend that extra $$$ on a low range EV.
