It's not all bad. If it is shorting activity (which I'm hoping that it is), it is getting soaked up pretty well.

Here you can see the shorting that has been occurring over the last month. It really picked up on the 27th of July and peaked on the 1st of August. On the 1st of August it was the 24th most shorted stock (by % of SOI) on the ASX. Also, on the 1st of August the shorting activity was 25% of overall trade.


Also you can see that this shorting activity really settled down on the 3rd, 4th and 5th of August. If you have a look at a chart you can see we had three really solid days once the shorting subsided. If it is shorting it will need to be covered at some point - which means the future may be brighter than what the SP is telling us today. Keep in mind that the run on the 3rd through to the 5th wasn't necessarily short covering. It may well have been Morgan Stanley just taking their foot off the gas.



Morgan Stanley suddenly started aggressively selling on these exact same dates - they were the number 1 seller.


BTW: They are losing a decent amount of money by following this strategy so I can't imagine they will persist with this for much longer.

Now, I'm not saying that today is definitely due to shorting and/or Morgan Stanley, I'm just highlighting the strange activity I've seen over the last 2 weeks.
