A very good question @naaman, The simple answer is 'I am not too sure'; Yes pXRF works on the Hard Rock RE minerals Monazite and Bastnasite and there are XRF models specifically for Lab determinations of Ionic salts; but I don't know of anybody using pXRF in field exploration for Ionic Clays. These point and shoot pXRF guns tend not to be very good at returning an accurate quantitative reading, you have to take an average over several shots, so I am pretty certain that AIMM / JORC would not recognise them for 'Ore Reserve' grade determination. That said they are an excellent qualitative device for Production and if an accurate correlation between TREE and Y can be readily determined then they would be a good ground mapping tool. Sorry I cant be more specific.
