The US actually needs rare earth Magnets - NPT REE (as ore). The problem is separation and manufacture of the magnets. Only Ucore, Lynas and MP materials have this (non Chinese) capability (Ucore is only pilot right now) and none have the capability to produce the quantities needed. None of them can produce RE Magnets profitably compared to the Chinese.
