I've been thinking more about this FJH technology in terms of REEs and what it might mean. Secondary separation is somewhat impacted by the presence of impurities such as Fe, Si, Al, Mg, Zn, Cu, Cr, Ni etc as well as actinides. To be able to strip these out or reduce them significantly through electrothermal (carbo-)chlorination in primary separation is highly advantageous to secondary separation. Even if SX was used after the FJH primary separation, it should be less onerous and have better efficiency. That is, even if Ucore was added at the end of the flowsheet for secondary separation, the decrease in impurities are perhaps just as valuable as the enriched MREC content, assuming this can be done in an efficient manner as we all hope FJH will enable. Further, the enriched MREC should reduce the burden on capex for Ucore column based mixer/settler modules if used.
