Yes, being granted a $US9.2 billion conditional loan, gives Ford the wherewithal to dominate new business in North America.
It certainly puts Ford as a strong contender for NAL and if it turns out to be the case it will be very interesting to see how it would be structured.
The operation at NAL is in two parts, first concentrate then Carbonate, as it stands Ford has no conversion facilities so the concentrate would have to be either bought by Ford and shipped to a convertor untill such time as the carbonate can be used in their own facilities in the US or shipped directly through an OTA with one of its battery suppliers or JV partners.
Currently Ford batteries are supplied by CATL in China, LG and SK On in Korea . It has a joint venture with SK On which are going to build an LFP facility in the US so a strong contender for our Carbonate.
So take your pick but at the moment our concentrate can only go to someone who has the capacity to convert it and that would also potentially bring other parties into play including POSCO.
Potentially the OTA may be in two parts, one for concentrate and one for a convertor and they may not be directly connected, we're going to find out in the next week or two...
