Yeah it just comes down to terminology, in my industry we mothball operational equipment that will never be returned to service (redundant). That way we no longer allocate resources and waste time nor money unnecessarily.
However there is certain equipment that may no longer be used but required in the future, in this case we place it under preservation mode which involves a schedule to periodically run the equipment and maintaining in a serviceable condition.
