Which is fine. Except Australia and Russia are the only OECD countries with no emissions rules. If people want the choice of a polluting car that is fine but they should pay for it. I expect petrol and diesel prices increasing will start forcing the transition anyway. I like the UK system where your rego costs are based on the co2 emissions. Higher emissions means higher fees.
The current system in most Australian states where someone buying a Corolla pays the same rego as a Hilux does nothing to transition people to cleaner cars and on the other hand does nothing to force manufacturers to give us cleaner cars. Great example is the new Prado that won't be offered as a hybrid in Australia. Toyota is one of the main offenders where they don't even bother to offer a Hybrid landcruiser but you can get a Hybrid Sequoia in the states.
